Serious Sam 4 is the fourth mainline installment in the Serious Sam franchise. It was released on September 24, 2020, and wasn’t exactly well-received by critics, receiving a lot of negative and mediocre reviews. Regardless of this, most fans of the Serious Sam franchise and crazy FPS games alike absolutely loved it. Why this is the case is pretty obvious once you get a glimpse of the game’s combat or try it out yourself. The game is currently available on PC and the developers also signed an exclusive deal with Google Stadia. This deal has made it so that the game won’t be releasing on PS4 or Xbox One at least until the earlier half of 2021.
Serious Sam 4 is ironically a game that isn’t serious at all. Instead, it is meant to be a fun and wild experience for players to enjoy without having to worry about any narrative or story. The game pins players against all sorts of supernatural enemies in a wide range of different locations. Players are given all sorts of different weapons to take out said enemies while performing a few different tasks. It must be said that by far the most intriguing thing about the game is its combat. The game definitely doesn’t fail to provide a blood-pumping experience that keeps players on the edge of their seats for the entire team.
The bad part is that this is really the only major great thing that you can say about Serious Sam 4. There’s no great narrative, not that great of a backstory, or even a great set of various characters for players to interact with. The lack of all these things makes Serious Sam 4 a very forgettable game and one that is completely carried by its great combat and game-play mechanics which make it as fun as it is. The overall visuals and soundtrack aren’t bad either, but that’s still not enough to save Serious Sam from all the inevitable bad and average reviews that it received from critics.
Regardless of all of this, Serious Sam 4 is a good game if you only wish to have a bit of fun and want a change of pace from most other games that are popular nowadays. If you have a PC or a Google Stadia, you can purchase and play the game right now. However, you’ll have to wait for a while if you’re a PS4 or Xbox One owner. In the end, Serious Sam 4 isn’t something that you absolutely have to play. But it is still recommended that you give it a shot if you’re a fan of FPS games like DOOM or liked the previous installments in the Serious Sam series.
